Abstract

The article is devoted to the problem of perception of O. Wilde’s poetry by national literatures of different countries. Based on the analysis of «The Ballad of Reading Gaol» by O. Wilde and its translation by K. Balmont, the correlation of ideological and philosophical views and poetics of English and Russian poets is traced. The problem of reproducing genre-forming features of the original, as well as recreating the unity of form and content on a new linguistic material is the subject of the research. The philosophical implication of the «Ballad» which is brought to the level of universal generalizations is of principal importance for Balmont. He reflects the basic structural characteristics of the «Ballad» – repetitions, color epithets; keeps the main elements of the form – the stanza, the size of the original. Analysis on the lexical level reveals the examples of «free» treatment of the original; Balmont’s subjectivism mostly manifests itself in his reproducing stylistic features of the original. Focusing on the philosophical content of the «Ballad», Balmont often disregards the form of the original. Despite the fact that there are many examples of accurate, word for word translation, the main thing for Balmont as a translator is to recreate the poetic world of the original, poetic mood of O.
