Abstract

On the territory of three regions of the Ural Federal District — Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Kurgan regions — 4.2 thousand objects have a negative impact on the environment. The Ural industry is one of the most powerful in Russia. Energy, mining, ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgy enterprises are the main polluters of environmental objects in the Sverdlovsk region. Additionally, in large cities, motor transport makes a big contribution to air pollution. As a result of the activities of enterprises, all environmental objects (natural waters, atmospheric air, soils) are harmed. Depending on the amount of damage caused, economic losses in the form of economic, social and environmental losses of society and nature are calculated. The calculation of such losses is extremely important and relevant at present for the industrial Ural. Analysis of economic losses caused to society and nature by industrial enterprises can help assess the amount of damage in value terms during the implementation of economic activities, adequately develop effective environmental protection measures and prevent man-made industrial hazards. Thus, the assessment of the real magnitude of economic losses from environmental violations is necessary for examining the overall efficiency of the economy, selecting investment projects, and implementing the principles of environmental insurance.
