Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between family strengths and the marriage intentions of unmarried men and women with a focus on family values. Data was collected from 337 unmarried men and women aged between 25 and 35 years, living in Busan, Daegu, and Gyeongsang provinces. The collected data was analyzed using the PASW 18.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs. The analysis of data revealed that family strengths had a positive influence on stable-romantic marital values, remunerative-instrumental marital values, and motivations of parenthood. Conversely, they had a negative influence on passive-exclusive marital values. Also, stable-romantic marital values, remunerative-instrumental marital values, and parenthood motivations had a positive influence on marriage intentions. Passive- exclusive marital values had a negative influence on marriage intentions. Also, there was a gender difference in the structural model explaining the relationship between the variables. The passive-exclusive marital values of unmarried men affected marriage intentions. In unmarried women, remunerative-instrumental marital values, passive-exclusive marital values, and parenthood motivations affected marriage intentions. These results were discussed in the light of the low birthrate policy.
