Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the nature of metaphorical utilization in conceptual metaphorical life mapping. To this end, the proposed multifaceted cognitive model(MCM) was applied to the structural metaphor of life, and the following results were obtained. First, in terms of the frequency of occurrence of MCM elements, the aspect of source varied compared to the aspect of target, and they generally appeared in the following order: material aspect, action aspect, goal aspect, and shape aspect. Second, in terms of the aspect of source of metaphorical ideas, we could distinguish between active(23.5%) and passive(76.5%) attitudes of the subject, which was consistent with the subject's loss of control in the aspect of target. From this, we could infer that the subjects' active attitudes showed that they were being guided by their passive attitudes rather than leading their lives. Third, the identification of the partial nature of metaphorical mapping eventually broadened our understanding of life in the target domain.
