Abstract

The silicate glass fiber cloth was preliminary dipped in cobalt (II) nitrate 6-hydrate alcoholic solution. Carbon whisker was formed on the pre-treated silicate glass fiber cloth through the reactoin of benzenesulfonic acid monohydrate, ethanol, and N2 gas mixture. At the reaction temperature above 1, 100°C, the generated carbon whiskers with diameter of 1-3μm linked the silicate glass fibers. At the temperature below 1, 100°C, the carbon whisker grown was 0.1μm in diameter and 2-200μm long. Tensile strength of the specimens carbonized at 1, 050°C was about 5.0 MPa and the highest strength of 13.2 MPa was obtained on the specimens carbonized at 1, 100°C. It was also found that the oxidation of the specimen started at the lower temperature with increasing amount of absorbed cobalt ion.
