Abstract

The main area of forensic research of human cartilage is related to the diagnosis of age according to the degree of mineralization and ossification. As a rule, they are based on anatomical and morphological, radiographic research methods, less often histological, biochemical, spectral, and computer-tomographic. Ossification of the larynx and costal cartilage begins in the interval from 15 to 20 years and, as a rule, ends in 60-69 years. Cartilage ossification in men occurs faster and more fully than in women. The vast majority of studies on costal cartilage do not have the proper statistical justification and corresponding models, which does not allow us to recommend them for expert practice. Diagnostic models developed for the thyroid and arytenoid cartilage allows use only for the corpses of males. The work on diagnosing a person’s age by cartilage is sporadic and has not yet been introduced into expert practice.
