Abstract
본 연구에서는 ‘일제 식민지 근대도시 조치원의 출현요인, 도시체계상에서의 위상 및 도시내부구조 형성과정’에 대하여 고찰하였다. 연구의 결과, 일제 식민지 근대도시 조치원의 주요 출현요인은 경부선 철도상의 조치원역의 설치로 요약되고, 도시체계상의 위상은 경부선을 통한 도로 및 수운 기능의 흡수·통합으로 요약된다. 또한, 도시내부구조 형성과정은 교통·행정·상업·교육 중심의 역전도시 건설로 요약된다. 일제시대 조치원의 한반도 도시체계상에서의 위상은 조치원의 도시내부구조 형성에 결정적 영향을 끼쳤다. 일제시대에 경부선 철도에 설치된 조치원역은 조치원을 한반도 도시체계에 편입시키는데 있어서 매개체 역할을 했고, 조치원 시가지 형성의 발생핵이 되어 조치원을 교통·행정·상업·교육 중심의 역전도시로 만드는데 결정적 역할을 했다. 본 연구를 통해 근대에 철도와 도로의 적환지적 요충에 철도역이 설치되면서 하나의 근대도시가 형성되고, 그 근대도시가 기능적 내부구조를 충전하면서 지리적으로 전개되는 과정을 확인했다.
