Abstract

We clinicostatistically analyzed 135 cases of malar bone fractures treated at our clinic during the 18 years between April 1976 andMarch 1994. The results are as follows.1) The ratio of males to females was 4.2.1, and the majority of cases were between 10 and 39 years old.2) Medical doctors were responsible for referring 84.5% of the cases, whereas 2.0% were referred by dentists.3) The majority of cases (83.6%) presented within two weeks after sustaining injury.4) Road traffic accidents were the most common cause of malar bone fractures.5) Trismus was the most frequent chief complaint.6) According to the classification by Knight & North, 31.8%, 19.3%, 26.7%, 5.9%, 5.2%, and 11.1% of 135 malar bone fractures belonged to Group I, Group II, Group III, Group IV, Group V, and Group VI, respectively.7) About one half of all cases were treated by antiinflammatory drugs only, and the others were usually treated by reduction without fixation or by fixation after reduction.
