Abstract

Formation and deformation of a sand cay at Awase tidal flat in Nakagusuku Bay in Okinawa was investigated through the comparison of aerial photographs and field observation. The formation of a sand cay had begun since 1970 due to the shoreward littoral transport accelerated by the offshore sea bed dredging near the coastline. The phenomenon is very similar to the formation of a barrier island observed at Sanur beach in Bali. In order to protect this island covered by trees at present, long-term viewpoint is important.
