Abstract

Several methods to obtain the interfacial shear strength between the carbon fibers and the matrix of the carbon fiber reinforced aluminium alloys (CFRM : two PAN based high modulus and a PAN based high strength CFs, Vf=70%) have been evaluated. The punch-out test using a specimen of sliced FRM having a thickness of about 1mm cut off perpendicular to the fibers was used successfully to obtain the interfacial shear strength of the FRMs in the case of a high fiber volume fraction of about 70%. In this method, it was considered from a geometrical analysis that the interfacial shear strength was obtained only when the volume fraction of the fibers was over 60%, as the fracture propagate mainly through the interface. The CFRMs with high modulus CFs and a matrix of Al-7.8%Mg alloy show a low interfacial shear strength of 14 MPa. The CFRMs with CFs of high modulus type and a matrix of Al-7.1% Si-0.36%Mg alloy exhibit a slightly higher interfacial shear strength of 16-27 MPa. CFRMs with high strength CFs and a matrix of Al-7.8%Mg alloy show a very high interfacial shear strength of 165 MPa and CFRMs with high tensile CF and a matrix of Al-7.1%Si-0.36%Mg also exhibit a high interfacial shear strength of 76 MPa.
