Abstract

Introduction. Foreign language training system and respectively foreign language proficiency assessment of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel in compliance with NATO standards, require improvement and acceleration at the current stage of Ukraininan Armed Forces reform and the decision made by Ukraine concerning its foreign political course. Purpose – comparative analysis of the system of foreign language proficiency assessment of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel using standardized methodology in accordance with NATO STANAG 6001 standards and current popular means, namely: IELTS, TOEFL, ECL.Methods: system analysis, induction and deduction, comparison, classification, generalization and systematization.Results. The essence, requirements and assessment criteria of such modern foreign language proficiency assessment means as: IELTS, TOEFL, ECL and assessment in accordance with STANAG 6001 NATO standard are researched in the article. The comparative analysis of the proficiency assessement method in accordance with “STANAG 6001” and such proficiency assessement means as IECL, TOEFIL, ECL has been carried out.Originality. In the course of the research, we found out that each of the methods we investigated had its own rating scale, criteria, and levels of foreign language proficiency. All methods cover such language skills as speaking, writing, reading, listening. IECL, TOEFIL, ECL can be carried out remotely. Currently, Foreign Languages Education and Research Centre of the National Defence University of Ukraine named after Ivan Chernyahovskyі is developing software that will allow taking the NATO STANAG 6001 test remotely in the future. Therefore, an analysis of current methods of foreign language proficiency assessment will be useful in the process of software development.Conclusion. Foreign language proficiency testing according to STANAG 6001 remains today the most effective and efficient method of assessing the foreign language proficiency level of the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It allows in a sufficiently limited time to assess the level of foreign language skills of the military personnel objectively, taking into account military aspects.
