Abstract

The purpose of the study was to analyze Japanese recognition and image about Oriental representative martial arts (Taekwondo, Wu Shu, t``ai chi, Judo and Karate) and to apply the analysis to an increase in variety and influence of Korean martial arts including Taekwondo with people of Japan where had variety and influence on Oriental martial arts and came to modernization in advance. The study got the below conclusions by analyzing Japanese recognition and image about five Oriental martial arts. First, Taekwondo was not included in items which Japanese people associated the most early with the word of martial arts. Second, they didn`t have other images of Taekwondo excepting kicking, South Korea and Olympic in their association by each item. Namely, it is necessary to make a concrete plan to stimulate people`s association for development of Taekwondo. Third, they had similar images of four martial arts excepting Taekwondo. Changes of image are not connected with good results at all times. However, it is necessary to make an additional endeavor to secure more popular image by keeping core images such as quick kicking.
