Abstract

The article deals with narrative strategies in the prose of the contemporary British writer Julian Barnes. His novels are psychological ones and they are based on the contrast of the images. Psychological motivation is the key in the novel. The final novels are characterized by postmodern features, which is the dominant image of the hero‐narrator. The chronotope of the novel consists of chronotops of the leading characters. Time‐space characters are described in detail. The dominant motifs of the novels is existential motives (loneliness, soul, salvation, neglect, «right – wrong»), which are stylistic constants in the work of this author. The genre content is provided by genre and style dominants, the main motives are analized in the article. The special role of chronotope is determined, its relationship and hierarchy is analysed. The features of the individual style of the writer and the relationship with the literary tradition are highlighted.
