Abstract

“Southern Impression” is a piano suite of the famous Chinese composer Zhu Jian’er, a composition that influenced considerably the Chinese piano music. The suite is based on the Chinese folk songs of Yunnan province. The composer uses pentatonic scale, western techniques of sound extraction and chord formation, which allows creating a harmonious folk-style composition. The article briefly describes history of the piano suite, examines folk songs on which it is based, considers peculiarities of interpretation, analyses the musical form.
