Abstract

This article is devoted to the results of the analysis of the speech genre ‘Nigerian letter’ based on the main criteria - the image of the author, that corresponds to one of the components of the model of a speech genre by T.V. Shmeleva. The analysis is based on the three groups of nigerian letters - messages aimed at getting money from fraudulent recipients - in English, Russian, French, Italian and Spanish. The classification’s criteria was the image of the author: heir in trouble, a businessman in need of a partner, a man dying from an incurable disease. The analysis of three types of epistolary texts revealed the characteristic verbal means of realization of com-munication strategy of manipulation on each of the three stages of the manipulative influence: preparatory, attractive and perlocutionary. The conclusions about the correlation of genre features of the text and manipulative character rendering text to the recipient were made.
