Abstract

The article is devoted to analysing two works of world literature - “Christmas Eve” by N. V. Gogol and “A New Year’s Eve Adventure” by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The research focuses on identifying spatial models and correlation between them in the writers’ poetics. The emphasis is on folkloric tradition because folk art is characterized by strict differentiation of various types of space. The authors draw parallels with the Chinese tale based on the “revived portrait” device, which appeared to be relevant for the artistic world of the mentioned writers. Special attention is paid to archetypal structures associated with female element (Oksana’s and Julia’s images). Comparative-historical and typological methods were used for analysing the literary works.
