Abstract

Determination of pigment composition in coated paper was studied using FT-IR. The ATR method was taken for the measurement because of its simple and nondestructive procedure for surface analysis. The results obtained showed that the ATR method was useful for quantitative analysis of pigment composition. Pigment components, such as clay, ground CaCO3, calcite PCC, and aragonite PCC, were determined separately from IR spectra of coated paper. Pigment composition determined by EPMA was almost identical to that obtained by FT-IR for commercial coated paper.
