Abstract

This paper examines the future society in science fiction focusing on feminist utopia in Marge Piercy’s Woman on the Edge of Time. Connie Ramos’ present position vividly shows the sexual, racial and economic oppression of Mexican American woman in the 1970s’ America. Her visit of utopian Mattapoisett builds up her strength to change the direction of future history. The future society of Mattapoisett is based on feminism, socialism and environmentalism and Piercy shows how the role of strong individual is essential to the construction of utopian future. Her unexpected visit to a dystopian future filled with sexism, environmental pollution, and racism also makes her realize that feminist utopia is not predetermined and she should fight to have utopian future. Her experiences of present, future utopia and dystopia show that the past, present and future are closely related to the construction of feminist utopia. Piercy contributed to the formation and development of feminist utopian science fiction through her exploration of feminist utopian society and emphasis on activism for historical change.
