Abstract

The article examines the notional basis of the concept “ чужой (outsider)” in the historical, etymological and explanatory dictionaries of the Russian language. The study aims to analyse how the Russian native speakers’ notion about “outsider” changes from the XV to the XXI century. By the material of I. I. Sreznevsky’s dictionary, V. I. Dahl’s “Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language”, A. N. Tikhonov’s “Word Formative Dictionary of the Russian Language” and explanatory dictionaries of the XX-XXI centuries the author examines the process of narrowing the semantics of the analysed word and representation of this process in the Russian linguistic worldview. The findings indicate that many lexical units with the root -чуж- , which were actively used in the XV-XVIII centuries, nowadays have lost their relevance.
