Abstract

In this essay, a former employee of the Atlantic branch of P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology remembers the temporary stay of Yu. A. Ivanov with his family in Kaliningrad and his work there in 1962–1964. There the Institute management has instructed him to provide scientific support for that Atlantic Branch of Shirshov Institute of Oceanology in defining the issue and research methodology in hydrophysical direction. Employees of the physical sector of the Branch fully appreciated the high level of his work on the study the processes of formation of large-scale structure of hydrophysical fields of the ocean. They acknowledged with full understanding his original ideas and developments in the study of the climate of the oceans. Yu.A. Ivanov generously shared with them the results of his research, new approaches to modeling the processes of the upper active layer of the ocean. Besides the fact that Yuri Alexandrovich Ivanov was an outstanding scientist, he was also a wonderful man – kind, cheerful, ironic and witty. Although he did not work for long in the Atlantic branch of the Institute of Oceanology, the contribution he made to the direction, organization and conduct of research carried out in the Department, in particular hydrological, is truly invaluable. Hydrologists of the Atlantic Department, and not only hydrologists, could only regret that Yuri Alexandrovich did not remain an employee of the Department, and because of the circumstances he was forced to return to Moscow.
