Abstract

The industrialization of Paris and it’s suburbs began since the middle of 19th century. The development of the industry in Paris accelerated during the ten years from 1895 to 1905. In the suburbs of Paris, the number of the enterprises increased fast at the beginning of the 20th century, and accelerated after the end of the First World War. The transfer of the enterprises from Paris to the suburbs and the new foundation of the enterprises caused its industrial development. The installation of the industries reached the zones less developed.
Consequently, the quantity of strikes increased in the suburbs. The metal industry dominated in the region, where also the social conflicts were the most common. The cities for example were Levallois-Perret, Saint-Denis, Saint-Ouen, Boulogne-Billancourt and Paris. The building and public workers were also active, but less than in the end of the nineteen century in Paris and the suburbs.
The chemical industry was the most important in this region in the late 19th century, but the metal industry, especially the car-airplane industry, became more considerable. The car industry that increased since 1890 became established more in the western suburbs than in the eastern suburbs, because of the richness of the west Paris. While the traditional industries like the textile or leather industry disappeared gradually, the industry of the transportation grew after the end of the War 1914-1918.
In the interwar, the number of the enterprises in Paris decreased progressively. On the other hand, the industries increased in the suburbs of Paris. The capital that was center of the industry in France, became more and more commercial sector. After the transfer of the enterprises from Paris to the suburbs, the number of the strikes in the suburbs increased too.
