Abstract

This study was intended to provide basic materials to present the strategy to continue motivating elementary school children to participate in sports activity. For this purpose, it attempted to identify their motive to participate in after-school extracurricular sports activity and its sustainable factor. And cronbach`s alpha was calculated using frequency analysis, orthodox rotation(varimax) method for reliability according to demographic characteristics of 416 5th- and 6th-graders of nine elementary schools in South Kyongsang Province. To test the mean and standard deviation between factors, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffe`s test were conducted. As a result, the following findings were obtained: 1. The Motivator of Participation in Sport First, it was found that the health factor and the fun factor were the motivator of participation in sports activity and that there was a difference in the health factor and the somatotype according to gender. And it was found that the male students had the higher health factor than the female counterparts and the female students had the higher somatotype than the male counterparts. Second, it was found that there was a difference in the health factor according to school years, and that there was a difference in it in case of 4th-, 5th-and 6th-graders of elementary school as a result of post hoc analysis. Overall, it was found that the 4th graders of elementary school had the highest health, psychological and fun factors as the motivator of participation in sports activity. Third, students tended to increase participation in sports activity as they had an increase in health, psychological and fun factors according to experience and the frequency of exercise. And it was found that the group of students with the great frequency of participation attached importance to the health factor in terms of frequency. 2. Sport Maintenance Factor First, the fun factor had the highest proportion in the sport maintenance factor overall, and the female students showed the high somatotype factor. Second, it was found that there was a significant difference in the vitality factor and the psychological factor according to school years. The elementary 4th graders had the high sport maintenance factor except the somatotype factor. Third, it was found that the group of more than 3 years of experience in sports activity had the high fun factor as the sport maintenance factor, and that the group of the students participating in sports activity 3~4 times a week had the high frequency of exercise in the vitality factor.
