Remote sensing methods in research of the Earth

The methods of spatial analysis used in the GM and geoinformatics raised archaeological research to a new level. They develop within the framework of one of the cartography branches – archaeological mapping. The Department of Cartography and Geoinformatics of St. Petersburg State University and the Institute of the History of Material Culture of the Russian Academy of Sciences have been working together for several years on deciphering and cataloging Neolithic archaeological sites in the Middle Yenisei (Minusinsk hollows) using remote sensing data. The application of remote sensing data for geoinformation mapping of archaeological sites is a scientific area that is actively developing thanks to technological capabilities: high resolution imagery and programs that allow processing of spatial data.
