Abstract

Abstract: The study aimed to determine the effect of teaching mathematics by using a strategy that is based on active learning on the development of systemic thinking skills of intermediate stage students. The experimental method was used which had a quasi-experimental design based on two groups: experimental and control group. An active learning-based strategy was designed for the selected study unit (real numbers and Fithaghors theory included in the math textbook of 2nd Intermediate School. A systemic thinking skills test was also developed; and its validity and reliability was verified. The test was administered to the sample of the study which consisted of (64) students of the 2nd grade of intermediate stage in Al Harith bin Hisham ALMakhzoumi School, Taif Province – Saudi Arabia, and who were distributed to the experimental and control groups, each of which included (32) students. The results of the study showed the effect of teaching mathematics using the active learning-based strategy on developing systemic thinking skills. There were statistically significant differences in the mean of the students' study sample grades of the two groups in the post-test of systemic thinking skills, in favor of the experimental group students. There were also statistically significant differences in the two means of the experimental group on pre and post systemic thinking skills tests, in favor of the post test. Keywords: Teaching mathematics, Active learning, Systemic thinking.
