Abstract

In general, project owners and project implementers should be bridged together through close dialogues in all stages of project implementation process. It is due to the fact that there are differences in understanding the various issues between the two groups playing different roles ranging from job details to project objectives. According to the previous studies on project communication, it is often reported that the project outcome is mainly determined by how effectively project communication is performed. For this reason, many studies have been conducted in order to increase the effectiveness of project communication. However, no studies have adopted the analytical method of properly measuring the cognitive differences between project owners and project implementers. As a useful tool to understand mutual cognition between the two parties, the co-orientation model has been used in many studies. This model argues that the effectiveness of mutual understanding and communication between the two groups increases as the level of co-orientation increases. In order to measure the effectiveness of communication, the model uses the level of agreement between the parties by examining the level of cognition of an individual vs. the others and the others vs. the individual in an organization. Accordingly, it is worthwhile to examine the applicability of the co-orientation model as a standard to measure the effectiveness in the management of project communication. The authors examined previous studies on the project communication through literature review. In this review, they sought to understand the implications and general trends in research through technical analyses on the concepts of project communication and the relevant methodologies. Also, they focused on measuring the level of overcoming communication errors resulting from the cognitive differences between the project owners and the project implementers in order to evaluate the level of achievement in project communication. In addition, they examined the type of analyses and the characteristics of cognitive subjects of previous studies on co-orientation in Korea in order to measure the applicability of the co-orientation model. Following their study, the authors have established relevant study models based on their conclusion that it is appropriate to apply the co-orientation model in order to analyze the cognitive differences and to resolve communication problems occurring in project managements by two different project groups: the project owner group and the project implementer group.
