Abstract

A case of traumatic carotid-cavernous sinus fistula (CCF) complicating fractures of the zygoma and mandible is reported. This fistula, characterized by pulsatile bruit, exophthalmons, chemosis, extraocular palsy and diplopia, is a very rare condition that may accompany maxillofacial fractures. Early diagnosis is important, as delay in treatment may cause irreversible neurological and ophthalmological damage. This lesion was treated by embolization of fistula using a detachable balloon catheter with good results. The necessity of total patient care, as well as, the importance of a team approach is emphasized.
