Abstract

The reflection coefficients of plane waves in the region of the second critical angle are analyzed from the point of view of geometric ray theory. The reflection coefficients of plane waves substantially depend on the parameters of the media. This dependence was investigated and it was shown that the position of the maximum of the reflection coefficient beyond the second critical point may be used for determining the velocity of shear waves in the medium below the interface. Examples of experimental materials are given.
