Abstract

This paper explores co-speech gestures of comedians, especially hand gestures in the Korean comedy program ‘Gap and Eul (Topdogs and Underdogs)’ based on McNeil (2005) - metaphoricity, iconicity, deictic representation, and rhythms of verbal speech-act. By analyzing these co-speech gestures in depth and comparing them with other types of language such as verbal language and sign language, this study provides systematic explanations of their cognitive mechanisms and conceptualization, and therefore, it demonstrates that co-speech gestures are highly related to mental processes on which other types of language are based. In addition, it figures out the characteristics of co-speech gestures in the Korean comedy.
