Abstract

The current qualitive research collects a big part of the international literature on the subject of occupational approaches on the field of forensic psychiatry. It attempts to make an executive summary of centric topics in forensic psychiatry (compulsory/involuntary hospitalization, imputation, mental disorders in prison, suicidality) through brief historical background, reports to current legislation in Greece and the contribution of the forensic science. Subsequently, a reference is being made of the role and the attitude of Occupational Therapy through theory and practice on the matter. The research is being focused on international literature with only a small amount of Greek reports, based on current Greek legislation. The method contains a literature review through the input of key-words in order books, articles and reports to be collected, in time of the last 20 years. The importance of Occupational Therapy approaches in the field of forensic psychiatry, especially concerning the aftercare and rehabilitation of mentally ill people after an involuntary hospitalization, the anticipation and treatment of suicidality and the social reintegration of mentally ill prisoners, are the three most considerable results of the research. In conclusion, it refers to the importance of afterward researches.
