Abstract

Nuclear Power Plant operators regularly check the performance of pumps and valves that perform safety functions through In-Service Test(IST), and monitor and evaluate the degree of vulnerability over time. Butterfly valve is one of the main types of valves for IST. Understanding of flow characteristics of butterfly valve is helpful in preventing the safety of the IST-related system from being impaired due to a transient phenomenon unintentionally caused by opening and closing of the butterfly valve. In this study, we tried to analyze the flow characteristics of butterfly valve and effect of turbulence model. Three different Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes turbulence models available in ANSYS Fluent R19, i.e., κ-ε, κ-ε (RNG) and κ-ω (SST) model were used for the calculation and flow characteristics were analyzed by varying the disk angle from 10° to 70°.
