Abstract

The aims of this study were to explore the relationships of aquatic exercise with abdominal obesity and indicators of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean postmenopausal women. A total of 40 postmenopausal Korean women (mean age 61.6 years) were enrolled in this study. Subjects were assigned to one of two groups : abdominal obesity group (AOG, n=24) and non-abdominal obesity group (NAOG, n=16). Waist circumstance (WC) is used to measure abdominal obesity. WC cutoff points for identifications of abdominal obesity was WC ≥ 85cm. Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) ranges of aquatic exercise (2 times per week, 60 minutes per time) for 12 weeks was from 12 to 14. Measurement indicators for MetS were WC, triglyceride (TG), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and blood glucose (BG). The results were as follows. First, aquatic exercise, regardless of abdominal obesity, significantly reduced WC level in postmenopausal women. Second, aquatic exercise significantly decreased the levels of BG in postmenopausal women. However, the reduction effect of aquatic exercise on BG was remarkable in AOG. Third, aquatic exercise significantly elevated an inverse relationship between TG and HDL-C in postmenopausal women. Fourth, there was a positive significant correlation between WC and BG. If postmenopausal women is WC 85cm it will raise provability of BG level being below 100mg/dL. In summary, postmenopausal women with abdominal obesity showed lower HDL-C level and higher WC, TG, BG than their counterparts with normal central fat. Postmenopausal women of WC 85cm has a high possibility of being less than 100mg/dL level of BG, and has a low provability of being MetS (also so-called insulin resistance syndrome). Therefore, exercise training in prevention and management of MetS in Korean postmenopausal women should concentrate on making WC level less than 85cm.
