Abstract
The study aims to determine the place of phraseological combinations in the system of language units by comparing them to free word combinations and phraseological units-idioms. Scientific novelty of the work lies in the fact that the important criterion underlying the comparison is determinacy of phraseological combinations components, which reveals a different degree of coherence between components depending on the grammatical structure of phraseological combinations. Basing on systematisation of the information about lexical-semantic and morphological-syntactic determinacy of phraseological combinations, the researcher has revealed their similarity to and differences with phraseological units-idioms and free word combinations. As a result, the status of phraseological combinations in the system of language units is identified. Phraseological combinations are considered as a transitional stage from free word combinations to phraseology.
