Abstract
Introduction: Postpartum hemorrhage is the major cause of maternal mortality in the world. Most of these deaths are caused by delay in appropriate diagnosis and management of postpartum hemorrhage. High quality of midwifery education has strong impacts on providing adequate services. Therefore, this study was done to compare the efficacy of web-based, simulation and conventional training on knowledge and skills retention of midwifery students in management of postpartum hemorrhage. Methods: This randomized three-group clinical trial was conducted on 54 midwifery students in school of Nursing and Midwifery of Mashhad, Iran in 2013. The students of web-based group were trained on-line for one week, the students of simulation group were trained for 4 hours in clinical skills centre and the students of conventional group were trained for 4 hours oral presentation. Before, one week and one month after the training, objective structured clinical examination and knowledge was taken. Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 11.5, chi-square, ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests. P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: Retention of knowledge and skills of midwifery students was significantly increased one week and one month after intervention in all three groups of web-based (p<0.001), simulation (p<0.001), conventional (p<0.001). Conclusions: Training increased the retention of knowledge and skills of midwifery students in management of postpartum hemorrhage. Skill retention in web-based group than other two groups, in teaching clinical skills. Therefore, web-based training method, which is low cost and more availability, can be used to increase the retention of knowledge and skills of midwifery students in management of postpartum hemorrhage.
