Abstract

Two cases of tumors of the parathyroid gland, with a difficult differential diagnosis from tumors of the thyroid gland, are presented.Case 1: Hyperparathyroidism and a nodular left goiter was found in a 39-year-old female. Based on extensive examination, a malignant tumor of the parathyroid gland was suspected. A left thyroid lobectomy, including the tumor, was then performed. The histological diagnosis was an oxyphyl cell follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland. However, a tumor of the parathyroid gland was strongly suspected, and a thyroglobulin stain was performed. The tumor was finally diagnosed as a functioning oxyphil cell adenoma of the parathyroid gland.Case 2: Hyperparathyroidism and a nodular left goiter with tenderness was found in a 73-year-old female. Based on Echo and CT scans, a malignant tumor of the thyroid gland was suspected. A left thyroid lobectomy was therefore performed. The histological diagnosis was an ectopic chief cell adenoma of the parathyroid gland in the thyroid gland.
