Abstract
Rural community residents name places in daily life which is passed down from the past. The purposes of this study mainly (1) to introduce new concept and method of analysis in naming places on spatial structure, (2) to define spatial mental image in Nakakubo hamlet using the above new method. The naming of place derives from the spatial image of natural features, mental spot and development potential of the area. Using spatial features in naming places, this paper defines the spatial mental image of Nakakubo hamlet ranges in step-like manner and the boundary between each step has distintive features and place spot.
