Abstract

In the study of this piercing test, four piercing tools, 4 mm, 3 mm, 2 mm, and 1.5mm in diameter, and Amsler testing machine are employed. The autographic recorder consists of dial gauge with a thin disc having slits, photo-cell, photo-electric current amplifier, and the others. By this apparatus, the approximate piercing diagrams are recorded on the Amsler recording drum. The specimens are of mild steel and brass of 4 mm in thickness. The results obtained are as follows.1, Minimum value of penetration of punch appears when tool clearance is between 5 and 10% of the stock thicknees.2, Nominal piercing stress decreases gradually in proportion to the increase of tool clearance.3, In order to obtain fine shaped hole, it is preferable that tool clearance has to be about 2% of the stock thickness.4, The smallest diameter of piercing punch for practical use is about 1.5mm for the mild steel stock and about 2 mm for the brass stock.5, And others.
