Abstract

The article is devoted to studying the contradictive and complicated terminological apparatus of the Chinese modal verbs. The authors analyse the existing terms related to modal verbs from the viewpoint of word-formative means and examine scientific conceptions revealing the essence of the category of modality and modal verbs as a means of its representation. The authors conclude that the diversity of terms related to the Chinese modal verbs correlates with the high level of ambiguity in this research area, which is explained by the fact that there is no generally accepted viewpoint on a wide range of problems in the study of these lexical units.
