Abstract

Stress protein, or heat shock protein 70 кDа (Hsp70) is the basic component of one of the most conservative system of cells and organisms protection from various damaging factors. A simple facility to enhance Hsp70 expression in the organism, in its organs and tissues, including CNS, is thermal preconditioning, i.e. heating of the organism up to a temperature of 41-42oС. The aim of the present study has been to elucidate a possibility to decrease the level of anxiety-like behavior in the elevated plus maze (EPL) test by a single session of TP. It has been shown that one day following the TP session rats exhibited a decrease in the level of anxiety by the number and time of open arm entries of EPL, the number of squares crossed in open arms and percentage of the number of open arm entries to all entries compared to control. Furthermore, an enhance in locomotor activity (by an increase in the number of closed arm entries) and exploration (by an increase in the number of open arm glances and head dips) has been elicited. The data obtained indicates a capacity of TP to exert an anxiolytic effect together with an increase in the levels of locomotion and exploration. These results can find an application in developing non-invasive ways of anxiety correction.
