Abstract

Introduction: Teachers as targets of bullying by their pupils is a global problem that has not received yet the necessary attention from the society, the school environment and the state. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the form and extent of the phenomenon of school violence and bullying against teachers in primary schools in Greece, the effects of this phenomenon both on teachers and the educational process, whether the teachers are trained to deal with such incidents of violent behavior by students, the causes of this kind of behavior and the suggested measures to prevent or deal with the phenomenon. Method: The research was conducted online by completing questionnaires by the participants. 94 teachers participated and the statistical analysis of the data was done using Excel. Results: The results indicate that 54.3% of the teachers have been bullied by students - with 75.5% having been attacked aggressively inside the classroom. 70.9% report verbal assault that may include insults, irony, insult, etc.. Most of teachers - bullying victims experience symptoms of anxiety, headaches, fatigue and difficulties in the development of social relations. In the work sector, an effect in the school climate was observed and problems in the conduct of teaching activities were reported. About 40% say they are not properly trained to deal with incidents of school violence and about 56% have little or no support from experts to deal with the phenomenon. Among the problems they face daily in their schools, the more serious problem is students' disobedience and the fact that during the lesson the teaching time is lost due to the students' disobedience. Finally, it is worth mentioning an encouraging fact. 35.1% of the participants feel safe at school they work and 22.3% very much safe. Discussion: The problem of bullying of teachers by pupils results from teachers' indifference and lack of communication with students. The cooperation between school and students' parents counseling by a psychologist combined with teacher training, the establishment of clear boundaries and rules for students and the imposition of penalties on delinquent students are teachers’ suggestions, in order for the school to deal with the occurrence of aggressive behaviors by students.
