Abstract

Abstract. The article highlights the role of Professor V. I. Stelletskyi in creating a methodology for teaching technique of veterinary obstetrics at veterinary institutes in the 1920's and 1930's and the modern use of its approaches and principles in the frame of training of veterinary obstetricians for the livestock sector. The aim of this research was to determine the contribution of V.I. Stelletskyi to development of the methodology of teaching veterinary obstetrics in the context of practical training of students. The research materials are represented by methodological publications in professional journals of the period of his activity. The methodological basis of the research is the exploratory approach, dialectically combined with the principles of historicism and systematicity. Also, systematic and analytical methods were applied. From the point of view of development level of veterinary science and education at the end of the IX – beginning of the XX century, institutions of higher veterinary education were employing mainly theoretical training system. In the pre-revolutionary period, veterinary obstetrics was a part of surgical sciences as a small component of surgery, so there was no separate methodology for teaching this discipline. Prof. V. I. Stelletskyi is one of the first tutors of the obstetrics course. He has developed a methodology for teaching this discipline, which gave not only good theoretical knowledge in this field of veterinary science, but also a high level of practical training. A wide range of forms of practical and clinical classes, teaching and processing educational material has served this purpose and ensured acquisition of a high knowledge, skills and competencies level by students,. After the analysis and determination of the main basis positions in training veterinarians-obstetricians, it becomes possible to conclude that the key to training of a veterinary specialist is not only a high level theoretical tuition, but also a thorough practical and clinical schooling. While being modernized and adapted to the requirements of the present time, the described elements retain their crucial role in training modern veterinarians and obstetricians.
