Abstract

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the method of hazardous municipal waste management in Greece. For this reason, the existing way of managing them is mentioned first. In addition, a survey was conducted through questionnaires, on the method that should now apply, based on the National Waste Management Plan 2020-2030 (NWMP 2020-2030), examining the views of waste managers in municipalities and experts in the waste recycling market. Regarding the structure of the dissertation, it is divided into 5 Chapters, where the above are analyzed. Chapter 1 first gives the definition of waste, as well as what the types of waste are, and then presents the situation regarding solid waste management in the European Union (EU) as a whole, while examining the case of Greece separately. Especially for Greece, special mention is made of the influence of the population on the production of waste, especially municipal waste, since its quota and concentration vary during the winter and summer tourist season. This is a result of both domestic tourism and external tourist flows. Chapter 2 first presents the current management of municipal waste streams in Greece and in particular municipal hazardous waste, with particular reference to what the NWMP 2020-2030 favors in relation to them. Then, the separation of municipal hazardous waste into distinct waste streams is justified, as well as reference is made to the specific streams selected in Greece. Finally, Alternative Management Systems (AMS) are presented and the methods of financing the entire effort to manage this waste are analyzed. Chapter 3 first mentions the purpose of this research MSc thesis concerning the management of hazardous waste in Greece, and then presents the content of the two questionnaires created to obtain views on this issue from waste managers in municipalities and waste recycling market experts. Chapter 4 first presents the success rate of the answer to the two questionnaires, which gives an indication of the importance given to the separation of hazardous municipal waste, 6 while then presents the results of each questionnaire per question and in some cases a combination of questions accompanied by analysis and discussion. Chapter 5 presents the conclusions deriving from the analysis of the answers given by the waste managers in the municipalities of the country and the experts of the waste recycling market. More specifically, a comparison is made between their views in order to show that they converge and / or diverge in relation to the management of municipal hazardous waste. There are also 7 Annexes on how waste is separated according to the European Waste Catalog (EWC), but also their type of management / recovery and their hazardness. In addition, the two questionnaires used to conduct the survey are presented. Finally, there the list of contacts of the municipalities where the questionnaires were sent is given.
