Abstract

The article provides data on the discovery of the vanilla orchid. Vanilla was called "Kashiksanat" or "Recondite Flower". Totonacs, an ethnic group of east-central Mexico, considered vanilla a sacred plant and used it as a divine offering in temples. The vanilla bean, obtained from Vanilla planifolia, is the source of vanilla extract, one of the most widely used food flavorings worldwide. Besides uses of vanilla in foods, and perfumes, it has complementary medicinal applications.
