Abstract

The relationship between government support and private donations to artistic activities has not yet been studied in Korea. In this article, we empirically examined the relationship between public support and private donations to professional arts organizations. Based on the results, we look into the implications for revitalizing donations to arts fields, along with the possibility of changes in policies related to support of the arts in Korea. The result shows that, in Korea, public support for professional arts organizations has the effect of inviting private donations, which is a meaningful implication when compared to overseas cases. This implies that public support for arts organizations can serve as a kind of signal to encourage potential donors to contribute. It can be seen that public assistance plays a significant role in increasing resources for arts activities. In addition to maintaining the current level of government support, we believe that through advocating for the social and economic value of artists, and implementing more comprehensive fundraising strategies, the ability of arts organizations to provide public services to their patrons would be further strengthened.
