Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the relationships between active straight leg raise(ASLR) test scores, ankle dorsiflexion, hip flexion, and extension range of motion(ROM) and core stability of healthy college students. We recruited 48 healthy male and female college students aged 20-29 years. We measured ASLR test scores of functional movement screen(FMS), ankle and hip mobility(ROM of ankle dorsiflexion and hip flexion and extension), and core stability(strength of hip extension and abduction and muscular endurance of lumbar flexion and extension). Data was analyzed using Pearson’s correlation analyses and the significance level was set to α=.05.BR ASLR test scores correlated with dorsiflexion ROM of the ankle on the dominant and non-dominant sides for male college students(r=.690 [p=.001] and r=.499 [p=.021], respectively). The same correlation was found for the dominant and non-dominant sides of female college students(r=.602 [p=.001] and r=.624 [p=.001], respectively). The correlations between ASLR test scores and dorsiflexion ROM of the ankle on the dominant and non-dominant sides of all participants were r=.408(p=.004) and r=.367(p=.011), respectively. The correlations between ASLR test scores and flexion ROM of the hip joint on the dominant and non-dominant sides for all participants were r=.519 (p=.000) and r=.517 (p=.000), respectively. Additionally, there was a significant correlation(r=-.329 [p=.024]) between the FMS ASLR test scores and strength of hip extension for all participants.BR These results show that the FMS ASLR test scores correlate with dorsiflexion mobility of the ankle for male college students, and with hip flexion mobility for female college students. FMS ASLR test scores did not have a consistently significant relationship with core stability. Therefore, caution is required in the interpretation of the FMS ASLR test scores of healthy young college students aged 20-29 years.
