Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the thought of Dirk Philips, who was a Mennonite leader in the sixteenth century, and to argue that his central doctrine, his Christology are interrelated with his view of the visible church. This paper outline Dirk Philips’ brief biography first. A look at Dirk’s life reveals the process of the formation of his theology and helps to understand his situation of ministry. Christology is a very important concept in understanding his theology because Dirk developed a distinctive Christology(on the basis of Hoffman’s ‘celestial flesh’ Christology), unlike other contemporary Christian leaders. After examining Dirk’s Christology, this paper will reveal the aspects of his Christology that are associated with his view of the visible church. In particular, his concept of the incarnation in his Christology is positioned as the most important doctrine for the saints to live a holy life, because he believed that the incarnation causes humans to have divine nature in Christ.
