Abstract

We made some numerical experiments on the methods of solution of tridiagonal linear equation which is an important problem in thermohydraulic calculations. Gauss elimination method and cyclic reduction method were tested using four computers for the diagonal linear system of equations and the turbulent pipe flow problem by means of the k-e two-equation model. The computing time was compared among both methods in terms of computers and the dimension of the tridiagonal matrix or the number of grid cells. As the result, it is found that the cyclic reduction method is faster on a FACOM VP2600/10 for more than 127 equations, while the Gauss elimination method is faster in case that the number of equations is small. And it is also found that the use of the cycle reduction method reduces the computing time of the turbulent pipe flow calculations on a FACOM VP2600/10.
