Abstract

Contrast agent is a medication that aids in diagnosis by enhancing the visibility of tissues or blood vessels during a CT scan. However, to prevent hypersensitivity reactions, patients were inconvenienced by having to fast for more than a few hours before the contrast-enhanced CT examination. Recently, the importance of fasting is gradually diminishing as indicated by numerous studies. Our hospital has also revised the fasting guidelines accordingly. As a result, tests other than the abdomen test are now being conducted without requiring fasting. The number of cases of hypersensitivity reactions and nausea before and after the revision was not significant, and retesting did not occur either. Currently, many hospitals in Korea are implementing various fasting guidelines before contrast-enhanced CT scans. It is urgently necessary to revise these guidelines in accordance with the recently announced trend.
