Abstract

Until now, It is known that the sports performance is exerted by the complex interaction between multiple genetic and environmental factors. Among various sport item, we analyzed the genetic predisposition for throwing event because there are no research results analyzing the genetic predisposition to throwing event regardless of domestic or foreign. In this study, The Met235Thr(C/T, rs699) polymorphism within angiotensinogen(AGT) gene was used as a single nucleotude polymorphism (SNP) for genetic epidemiological study in order to find the useful genetic marker that affect performance in throwing event. A total of 78 subjects(mean age±standard deviation(SD ); 19.7±1.4 year) were recruited in this study, and they were divided into controls(n=55) and throwing athletes(n=23). When genetic test was performed, there were no significant differences in the genotype and allele distributions of Met235Thr(C/T, rs699) polymorphism within AGT gene between controls and throwing athletes, respectively(p.05). Thus, the Met235Thr(C/T, rs699) polymorphism within angiotensinogen(AGT) gene may not be an useful genetic marker that affect the performance in at least Korean throwing event. However, the distribution of this geneti polymorphism was race or ethnic-specific differences, further studies by using other race or ethnic groups will be required. In addition, the sample size in this study was modest, additional confirmation study will also be required by using larger sample size.
