Abstract
Kim Whanki, an artist who represents twentieth century Korean art, had a close relationship with the art world of Japan. During his sojourn in Japan throughout the 1930s’, Kim submitted his artwork to the Nika Art Exhibition and joined the Free Artists Association(Jiyu Bijutsuka Kyokai). In short, Kim was trained as and became an artist in the art world of Japan, or more specifically in the context of the abstract art movement of Japan. By focusing on the footsteps Kim left in Japan which has been relatively less well-known, this article aims to examine an aspect of the pre-war history of artistic exchange between Korean and Japan, and the unique qualities of the art world of Japan in Kim’s time.
