Abstract

The history and modern ideas about the infl uence of a plurality of diseases on the state of human health are highlighted. To date, large-scale epidemiological observations have shown that a third of all current diseases in the population meet more diagnostic criteria than one disorder. According to many studies, it is especially important to consider the condolences of two or more independent illnesses that occur in a lifetime. You can fi nd various synonyms for comorbidity: “polymorbidity”, “multimorbidity”, “multifactorial diseases”, “polypathy”, “condolence”, “dual diagnosis”, “pluripathology”. Our compatriots generally prefer the terms “polypathy”, “combined pathology”; in foreign literature, the defi nition of “comorbidity” is more popular. The prognostic value of the type of comorbidity for assessing the outcome (decreased ability to work, disability, death) can be assessed in accordance with the a priori models of comorbidity proposed by the authors of the article.
